FOG Best Management Practices

The following is a list of Best Management Practices (BMPs), for preventing Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs), prolonging the life of your sewer service line and your Grease Interceptor (GI), and minimizing the inconvenience and cost of SSOs:

DO:
  • Throw all solids, including FOG and food waste, into the trash
  • Be conservative with use of FOG in food preparation and serving
  • Use all cleaning chemicals according to the label instructions
  • Use paper towels to wipe up oil and grease in cooking tools, work areas and under fryer baskets and dispose of into trash
  • Check all sinks and floor drains for strainers and covers and replace if missing
  • Know the location an proper operation of all FOG control devices
  • Deposit used fryer oil in an appropriate storage container
  • Keep dumpster areas clean and free of loose trash
  • Run a steady stream of water when using the garbage disposal

DON'T:
  • Put grease or fryer oil down any sink or floor drain
  • Dispose of food or food scraps down any sink or floor drain
  • Pour bleach directly down any sink or floor drain (bleach will harden FOG)
  • Remove sink strainers or drain covers (empty any scraps into the trash)
  • Misuse cleaning chemicals (be sure to follow the instructions on the label)
  • Modify your GI without written approval from the City of Federal Heights
