Position Objectives:
JOB DEFINITION: Under administrative direction; manages, designs, and coordinates all event efforts including communication, marketing, advertising and social media strategies for the City of Federal Heights as well as serves as the Administrative Specialist for the Federal Heights Fire Department.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the development, execution and management of special events and communication, marketing, advertising and social media strategies for the City of Federal Heights.
- Generates story ideas and writes/edits articles for the website, e-newsletters, publications, newspaper and social media.
- Responsible for website content and maintenance, including updates of spreadsheets, PDFs and graphics.
- Monitors local newspapers and online sources, filing and distributing stories related to City of Federal Heights
- Oversees Citywide communications and branding efforts.
- Seeks out and makes recommendations for opportunities to coordinate communications efforts.
- Responds to general requests from the public.
- Coordinates and executes events such as Ice Cream Socials, Annual Business Lunch, Volunteer Dinner, Holiday Commercial Lighting Contest, Mayor’s Lighting event, Employee Appreciation Lunch, Volunteer Appreciation Lunch, employee events, and other events.
- Produces invitations, PowerPoint presentations and proposals.
- Responsible for creation and distribution of the quarterly city newsletter, the Focus.
- Assist the Fire Chief with special projects.
- Trained in Fire Department administrative specialist duties.
- Covers City Hall front desk as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Must be organized, punctual and able to follow directions.
- Knowledge of applicable City, county, State and federal statutes, regulations, ordinances and codes.
- Knowledge of general principles of government operations.
- Knowledge of timelines, deliverables, and team coordination.
- Knowledge of event logistics, from conceptualization to execution.
- Skill in working effectively in a sensitive, political environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to lead all City events and ensure all aspects of the event are meticulously planned and executed.
- Ability to work with minimal oversight, applying good judgment and independent decision-making.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive issues effectively.
- Ability to participate effectively in presentations and discussions with diverse groups.
- Ability to use standard computer equipment and software including word processing, data base management, spreadsheet applications.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected and appointed officials, city staff, property owners and various agencies and organizations.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Graduate or equivalent - required.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or related fields from an accredited college or university preferred.
- Three years’ experience in corporate or government communications and/or market research.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Colorado Driver’s license.
- The City of Federal Heights conducts pre-employment drug testing and a background investigation as a condition of employment.
- Evening, weekend and/or holiday hours may be required.
WORKING ENVIRONMENTS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical activities include frequent sitting, regular standing and walking, hearing, vision, speaking and manual dexterity. Regular driving required. Office and field environment. May attend City Council meetings as requested.
Benefits:
The City of Federal Heights provides the following benefits to employees: 11 holidays, vacation accruals for full-time employees are based on years of service from 6.67-13.33 hours per month. Full-time firefighters accrue vacation based on years of service from 12-18 hours per month. Full-time employees accrue sick leave at the rate of 8 hours per month of service to a maximum of 960 hours. Part-time employees accrue sick leave at a rate of 1 hour per 30 hours worked. Regular full-time employees, except for police officers and firefighters, are required to participate in the City’s 401(a) retirement plan. A voluntary 457 plan is also available to all regular employees. Police Officers and firefighters participate in a State-approved retirement plan, FPPA. The City of Federal Heights offers both short-term disability and long-term disability to its regular and part-time employees. Police officers and firefighters are eligible for long-term disability benefits in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth by the State of Colorado’s Fire and Police Pension Association (FPPA). The City of Federal Heights offers life insurance benefits to all full- and part-time employees. Part-time employees must work a minimum of 30 hours per week to be eligible for life insurance benefits. The City also offers a voluntary life insurance plan for employees to purchase additional life insurance. Regular and part-time employees are eligible for City of Federal Heights benefits the first of the month after their hire date. Part-time employees must work at least 30 hours per week to be eligible for pro-rated benefits. Medical benefits are offered through Colorado Employers Benefit Trust (CEBT), which is self-funded multiple employer trust that currently provides employee benefits for over 300 public entities, school districts, and colleges. The City of Federal Heights offers the choice of three medical plans through CEBT. Employees can choose from an EPO, PPO, or Kaiser HMO plan. Vision insurance is provided through VSP, and dental benefits are offered through Delta Dental.
