Position Objectives:

Under limited supervision, drives and operates ambulances and participates in, rescue, and emergency medical services. Responds to and provides support for all exterior firefighting related activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by position.  Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities.  Position will be required to perform additional duties as assigned.

 

DUTIES: 

  • Respond to emergency medical care calls as assigned for assistance to sick or injured people and treat them according to Advanced Life Support guidelines, including the use of intravenous therapy, endotracheal intubation, pharmacological therapy, pacing, cardioversion and defibrillation when indicated.
  • Respond to fire emergency calls as assigned, and perform tasks that may include opening fire hydrants, pulling and moving hose, lifting and moving various firefighting equipment. Use department equipment as appropriate to assist and support firefighting operations for fires in all types of buildings, grass, terrain, automobiles, or other sites.
  • Drive and operate all department ambulances or rescue vehicles as qualified and appropriate to the scene of the incident.
  • Perform daily equipment tests and upkeep tasks to keep all equipment and apparatus in state of readiness for emergencies. Perform routine equipment maintenance, such as checking fluids, hoses, and air pressure, and making corrections. For mechanical maintenance and repair take to City shop. Design, recommend, and/or perform modifications and fabrication for equipment. To better carry needed equipment.
  • Participate in pre-planning, fire inspections and life safety inspections to improve service and increase community safety.
  • As directed, participate in training classes to maintain and upgrade knowledge, skills, and certification.
  • Complete annual training and documentation of both EMS and Fire Support training.
  • Check hydrants and test available water flows on a regular schedule and as needed; maintain records, including location and types of hydrants.
  • Perform work in accordance with all safety policies and procedures, including the protocols for infection control.
  • Wash equipment and perform station maintenance, such as washing windows, washing and waxing floors, cleaning kitchen utensils and equipment, and doing laundry. Perform grounds maintenance, such as collecting debris, trimming, and watering.
  • On occasion, will make public presentations, conduct tours of the station, or assist in presenting training classes for other staff, volunteers, community groups, or fire personnel from other districts.
  • As directed, use computers to enter data and generate reports, and maintain necessary manual and computer records.
  • Participate in off-duty rotation call-back for standby and fire calls.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, statutes, and ordinances, related to fire prevention, and inspection.
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the Federal Heights Fire Department.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and policies.
  • Knowledge of the boundaries, streets, neighborhoods and business areas of the City of Federal Heights.
  • Skill in the safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret information and make independent decisions.
  • Ability to successfully complete specialized training or certifications as required by the particular duties.
  • Ability to effectively perform strenuous physical labor in threatening and stressful situations.
  • Ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend detailed or complex information.
  • Ability to use standard computer equipment and software including word processing, data base management, spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, other pubic safety agencies, hospitals and medical facilities, community members, and the general public.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current valid State of Colorado paramedic certification.
  • A valid Colorado State Driver's license.
  • As a pre-requisite for consideration for employment, must successfully complete job-related physical agility, tests and the written, and oral, and other tests prescribed by the City.
  • Current ACLS and CPR certifications.
  • Completed ICS 700 and ICS 800 certifications.

 

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Colorado Drivers License and good driving record. Physical fitness to perform the functions of the job.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENTS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

Sufficient physical stamina and agility to perform physical activities - These activities include, but are not limited to, climbing up and down stairs, raising and climbing ladders, crawling into confined spaces, wielding axes, hauling hose, etc., and the ability to sustain this activity for the duration of the emergency, without interruption while wearing bulky protective gear.

Hearing ability sufficient, for example, to use stethoscope to assess heart and lung sounds where ambient noise is a factor, communicating with team members, and the use of portable radios while wearing self-contained breathing apparatus.

 

Benefits:

The City of Federal Heights provides the following benefits to employees: 11 holidays, vacation accruals for full-time employees are based on years of service from 6.67-13.33 hours per month. Full-time firefighters accrue vacation based on years of service from 12-18 hours per month.  Full-time employees accrue sick leave at the rate of 8 hours per month of service to a maximum of 960 hours. Part-time employees accrue sick leave at a rate of 1 hour per 30 hours worked. Regular full-time employees, except for police officers and firefighters, are required to participate in the City’s 401(a) retirement plan. A voluntary 457 plan is also available to all regular employees.  Police Officers and firefighters participate in a State-approved retirement plan, FPPA.  The City of Federal Heights offers both short-term disability and long-term disability to its regular and part-time employees. Police officers and firefighters are eligible for long-term disability benefits in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth by the State of Colorado’s Fire and Police Pension Association (FPPA).  The City of Federal Heights offers life insurance benefits to all full- and part-time employees. Part-time employees must work a minimum of 30 hours per week to be eligible for life insurance benefits. The City also offers a voluntary life insurance plan for employees to purchase additional life insurance.  Regular and part-time employees are eligible for City of Federal Heights benefits the first of the month after their hire date. Part-time employees must work at least 30 hours per week to be eligible for pro-rated benefits.   Medical benefits are offered through Colorado Employers Benefit Trust (CEBT), which is self-funded multiple employer trust that currently provides employee benefits for over 300 public entities, school districts, and colleges. The City of Federal Heights offers the choice of three medical plans through CEBT. Employees can choose from an EPO, PPO, or Kaiser HMO plan.  Vision insurance is provided through VSP, and dental benefits are offered through Delta Dental.
