Ruston Park Phase A - Construction Project

For public safety, Ruston Park has been closed for construction beginning the week of January 11th and continuing until the project is completed. The construction timeline is estimated below. Project updates will be provided here as progress continues and if the project timeline changes that will be noted below. Please review all the information provided here especially the Project Partners, Funding and Plan provided above.

CONSTRUCTION TIMELINE: January 2021 - November 2022.

FUNDING: $4,795,000.00

PROJECT PARTNERS: Mile High Flood District, ICON Engineering, DHM Design and Tezak Heavy Equipment

CONSTRUCTION:

There is a full closure of Ruston Park during construction which is estimated to continue through September. No-parking will be allowed along the west side of  Zuni St. and the entrances from the Northborough neighborhood into the park will be closed. Construction times will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The main entrance for construction activities will be taken from Zuni St. to minimize impacts on adjacent neighbors but significant construction will take place in the two entrances to the park from Northborough as they contain major stormwater facilities that pull water from the neighborhood into the park and those are being reconfigured for this project. The project will be managed by the Mile High Flood District, and has been awarded to Tezak Construction but residents may notice a number of other marked construction vehicles from other companies working on the site during this time frame as the contractor has a number of sub-contractors working on the project as well.

THE PROJECT:

Construction of Phase A of the Ruston Park Master Plan has begun after 11 years of planning that began in 2010. This is a multi-phased plan, and Phase A includes the following items:

  • Restoration and improvements to the Niver Creek channel, wetlands and natural springs that run through the park
  • Stormwater facility improvements that help to drain the Northborough neighborhood
  • The addition of a formal entrance road and parking lot connected to Zuni Street
  • Improvements to the Northborough neighborhood entrances to the park from 98th Drive, 99th Place including overlook plazas for each entrance
  • Lighting for pedestrian, roadway and parking lot areas
  • ADA Improvements will be made to allow for the park to be enjoyed by everyone in the community regardless of their disability status
  • The addition of an emergency access point for fire engines
  • The addition of a wetland observation pavilion and a picnic shelter
  • Significant landscape plantings and removal of existing invasive trees and plants
  • Reconfiguration of sidewalks that will connect the new parking lot to the playground facilities
  • Interpretive signage to inform park visitors about the history of the park, its vital role to wildlife and its connection to the rivers systems of Colorado and the Greater Mississippi Watershed

The City thanks you for your support of this project and your patience during the construction phase. We look forward to a grand opening when the project is completed in the fall.
