The City of Federal Heights Mayor and City Council directed staff to work on improving roadway safety. After research and discussion, the Council approved installation of state-of-the-art digital red-light and speed safety cameras to decrease traffic violations and collisions and help increase community safety.

Federal Heights has partnered with Verra Mobility to install red-light, speed and school zone speed safety cameras at six high-risk locations around the city.

Cameras will be installed at these locations:

  • (2) 92nd Avenue and Tejon Street - Both Directions Speed (ACTIVE) (Citation Mode)
  • (1) 84th Ave Near Pinnacle Charter School - Speed (ACTIVE) (Warning Period Ends on 01-12-2026)
  • (2) Locations Pending Traffic & Accident Data Studies (PENDING)

These cameras have been proven effective in reducing crashes and serious injuries. With a history of fatal crashes at these locations, it’s critical we act now to change dangerous driving behavior. Verra Mobility’s programs across the U.S. gathered 4.6 million red-light citations in 2023, with a recidivism rate of 84%, meaning most violators did not repeat their illegal behavior. Speed programs issued 11.6 million speed citations with a 62% recidivism rate.

This is just one of the many tools Federal Heights is employing to keep the community safe.

How do the red-light safety cameras work?

Federal Heights is improving community safety by employing state-of-the-art digital cameras and violation detection systems to decrease traffic control regulations violations and reduce collisions. Red-light cameras have been proven effective in lowering red-light violations and right-angle collisions, and speed cameras consistently lessen reckless speeding and reduce pedestrian-related accidents. Municipalities using these systems consistently report safer roads with fewer collisions.

Why did I receive a Notice of Violation?

Based upon images captured by the automated system, an officer of the Federal Heights Police Department has determined that your vehicle committed a red-light violation or exceeded the posted speed limit. As the vehicle's registered owner, the Notice of Violation has been issued to you.

What is the fine amount for a violation? Is there a late fee?

The fine amount is $75 for a red-light violation, and the fine amount is $40 for a speed violation in a non-school zone. It is $80 for a speed violation in a school zone or maintenance, construction, or repair zone. The fine for a speed violation will be doubled if it occurs within a school or construction zone, as reflected in Colorado Revised Statutes Title 42. Vehicles and Traffic § 42-4-615. There are no late fees for delinquent payments. An infraction detected through the use of an automated vehicle identification system is a non-criminal offense for which you cannot go to jail. Like a parking ticket, an infraction detected by a traffic camera is NOT part of the violator's driving record. Therefore, a finding that the infraction was committed, either by payment or after a hearing, will not be reported to the Department of Licensing. However, failure to respond to a Notice of Violation, failure to appear for a requested hearing, or failure to pay a penalty imposed after a hearing may result in issuing Summons and Complaint with personal service at an additional charge of $60. Once personal service has been provided, your appearance in court will be required.

Will “points” be assessed on my driving record?

This violation will not be reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles. This violation is considered a civil infraction; no points will be assessed.
