TRACT #34 AND TRACT #35 - BERTA V. THURMAN

Berta V. Thurman was the 13th signer on the Federal Heights petition to incorporate.  Berta and her husband, Lonnie, had purchased Tracts #34 and #35 from Albert E. Johnson on September 29, 1930.

Berta “Bertie” Viola Montgomery was born in Jacksonville, Arkansas on February 25, 1897 to Percy Irwin and Dovie (Pack) Montgomery.  Bertie, her parents and her siblings, Percy and Ozella, moved to Indian Territory shortly after she was born.  Ten more children were born to the family, including two sets of twins, over the next 20 years.  Bertie was active in agricultural activities in her community in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma.

In 1923, Berta married Lonnie Thurman in Ft. Worth, Texas.  By 1925, the couple was living in Denver.

The couple purchased the two lots on North Federal in 1930.  Lonnie deeded the two tracts to Berta in 1935 and the couple was divorced on September 22, 1936.  Berta married Clarence Wilson 27 days later.  Clarence and Berta lived in Federal Heights for many years.  Clarence served on the Town Board in 1947 and 1948.  In 1953, Berta added Clarence's name to the deed for Tracts #34 and #35.

Clarence died on February 11, 1974 and Berta died two years later on February 3, 1976, just a few days before her 79th birthday.
