MRS. A. BAUMGARTEL
Mrs. A. Baumgartel was the 22nd signer of the Petition to Incorporate Federal Heights. She did not own any tracts at the time of signing, but purchased tracts #26 and #27 from her mother, Clara Berkhardt, on August 19, 1940.
Lena Clara Burkhardt was born in Colorado on June 28, 1883 to German immigrants, Ernest and Clara (Wagner) Berkhardt. In 1900, Lena lived with her parents and five younger brothers at 4334 Elizabeth Street in Denver.
On Feb 24, 1909, Lena married Alvin Robert Baumgartel in Denver. Lena was 25 years old, and Alvin was 34. On November 22, 1910, Alvin Ernest Baumgartel, Jr. was born to the couple.
The Baumgartels lived at 2629 Arapahoe Street in Denver for 30 years. Lena did not work outside the home. In the 1940 census she described herself as an “unpaid family worker.”
Lena’s husband, Alvin, died in 1951. Lena sold the Federal Heights Tract #26 to Joseph Keller in 1955 and Tract #27 Hiram J. and Cecilia Wolverton in 1960. She moved to 1191 S. Corona Street in Denver where she lived for the remainder of her life. Lena volunteered with the Daughters of Colorado, serving in various capacities.
Lena passed away in August 1976. She was laid to rest at Fairmount Cemetery in Denver.
