FLORENCE M. JOHNSON - TRACTS #1-5, #8, #10, #11, #27, #31, #36-41, and #48-55
Florence M. Johnson was the 18th signer on the City of Federal Heights incorporation petition. Though Florence did not live in the immediate area, she was eligible to sign the petition as a property owner.
Florence Mary Bonekemper was born October 3, 1891 in Pennsylvania to Edward and Alice (Miller) Bonekemper. She was the third oldest of 11 children with five brothers and five sisters. One of her older brothers, Harold, 13, made national news in 1903, when he started a newspaper devoted to the interests of his hometown.
On August 21, 1915, 22-year-old Florence married 39-year-old Albert Edward Johnson in Philadelphia.
Albert was born in England on January 20, 1876, and came to the United States with his parents, Hardaker (a tailor) and Sarah (a confectioner), and two siblings, Francis and Robert. Albert and his family arrived August 5, 1883, settling near Philadelphia.
Soon after their marriage, Florence and Albert moved to Colorado. Albert was a real estate agent and owned many properties, including all 55 tracts in original Federal Heights. After selling about half of the 55 tracts, on October 8, 1930, Albert sold 28 tracts to his wife Florence “in consideration of the sum of One Dollar, Love and Affection.”
The Johnsons never lived in Federal Heights, living most of their lives in Denver and in Jefferson County. In a 1947 obituary of Florence’s sister, Bertha, Florence is said to have also lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Albert died in May of 1967 and Florence died in September of 1979. Both are buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
