Federal Heights Citizens Police Academy

Ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes at your Police Department?

The Federal Heights Citizens Police Academy is an eight-week interactive program designed to give residents a firsthand look at modern policing. Meet the officers who serve your community, explore specialized units, participate in demonstrations, and gain a better understanding of how your police department operates. Registration for the academy is free!

 

2026 Academy Schedule

August 6th - September 24th 

Meets once a week on Thursday Nights

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Final Session includes graduation

 

What You'll Experience:

Instead of simply hearing about policing, you'll experience it yourself:

Topics covered through the academy include, but are not limited to:

  • Patrol Operations
  • Criminal Investigations
  • Crime Scene and Evidence Processing
  • 911 Communications
  • Crisis Intervention and Peer Support
  • Firearms unit and weapons safety
  • DUI and Traffic Enforcement
  • Special Response Team (SRT)
  • K9 Unit Demonstration
  • Hands-on Police Demonstrations

 

Who Can Apply?

  • Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 18 years old. 
  • Residency Preference: FHPD will prioritize people who live or work in the city.
  • Attendance Commitment: Our program runs once a week for 8 weeks. Missing more than 2 classes usually results in dismissal or an inability to graduate.
  • Paperwork: You must complete an application, submit a copy of a valid driver’s license, and sign a liability waiver to participate in hands-on activities.

 

Background Check

For safety of participants and staff, all applicants will undergo a criminal history background check. Applications may be denied for reasons including:

  • Any Felony Convictions
  • Recent Misdemeanor Arrests or Convictions in the last 1 to 3 years
  • Any past convictions for domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking
  • Recent or multiple DUI/DWAI offenses, or a currently suspended or revoked driver's license.
  • Active warrants, pending court cases, or being under active probation/parole.
  • The FHPD has the right and will deny or remove anyone who exhibits disruptive classroom behavior or actions that detract from a safe learning environment.
