Here is a listing of benefits offered by the City of Federal Heights. The City reserves the right to alter or eliminate any benefits provided to its employees. Any alteration, elimination or revision may be made applicable to current as well as future employees.

Medical & Dental Insurance
Full Time Employees
The City will pay a portion of the premium for medical and dental insurance as approved by city council. The City currently offers coverage through Kaiser and PacifiCare for medical coverage and Delta Dental for Dental coverage.
An employee's portion of the premium shall be collected through pre-tax payroll deductions.
Part Time Employees
The City will pay a pro-rated portion of the medical and dental insurance premium based on the employee's scheduled work hours. To be eligible, an employee must work at least 24 hours per work period.
Limited Part Time and Temporary Employees
Unless otherwise specified, employees hired on a limited part time or temporary basis are not eligible for medical or dental insurance benefits.
The City also offers supplemental insurances through AFLAC, Standard Life and Pre-Paid Legal.
Disability InsuranceShort Term
Regular full and part time employees are eligible for short-term disability benefits in a weekly amount equal to 60% of the employee's current pay based upon the employee's average weekly income for the preceding six months, however, such amount shall not exceed $450.00 per week and shall not continue for more than 26 weeks.
Long Term
Regular full and part-time employees except for police officers, firefighters and Amb EMT P's, are eligible for long-term disability benefits in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth by the City's long-term disability benefits provider. Police officers, firefighters and Amb EMT P's are eligible for long-term disability benefits in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth by the State of Colorado's Fire and Police Pension Association (FPPA). Such employees hired after January 1, 1997, are required to pay the FPPA a percentage of their annual salary as a premium for such benefit.
Life InsuranceThe City provides $10K life insurance benefits to all full and part time employees who work a minimum of 20 hours per week. The city also offers a Voluntary Life Insurance plan.
EAPThe City offers an Employee Assistance Program to all regular and volunteer employees.
This program offers counseling and resource services to employees.
RetirementRegular employees, except for police officers, firefighters and Amb EMT P's after one year of employment are required to participate in the City 401A retirement plan. The contribution from the Employee and the City match are an amount set by resolution of City Council.
Temporary and limited part-time employees are not eligible for retirement benefits.
All police officers, firefighters and Amb EMT P's are required to pay a percentage of their annual salary into a State approved retirement plan. The City also contributes to such plan in an amount set by resolution of City Council.
A voluntary 457 Plan is also available to all regular employees.
Holidays, Vacations, and Leave TimeThe following paid holidays shall be observed: New Year's Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, one half (1/2) day on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Sick Leave
Employees may use sick leave when unable to perform their duties as a result of injury, illness or doctor's appointment for themselves or for their immediate family.
Personal Leave
Subject to Department Director approval, employees may take accumulated sick leave as personal leave. Employees may take 24 hours of personal leave per year, except for twenty-four hour ambulance and fire employees, who may take 36 hours of personal leave per year. Unused personal leave may not be carried over into any following year.
Voting
Any employee whose work schedule prevents voting before or after work hours shall be permitted paid leave not exceeding two hours for the purpose of voting. Paid leave shall not be permitted for any employee whose work schedule is such that there are three or more hours between the time of the poll's opening and closing during which the employee is not required to be at work.
Jury Duty
An employee who is summoned for jury duty shall be compensated at the employee's regular rate for the periods of such service subject to the following:
A copy of the summons must be submitted to an employee's supervisor. Any stipend paid to the employee for jury service must be paid to the City or an equivalent amount deducted from the employee's pay.
Bereavement
For the death of an immediate family member, an employee may receive up to three days of paid bereavement leave. Employees may request additional leave and, if granted, such leave may be deducted from the employee's accrued sick or vacation leave or taken as unpaid leave if paid leave is unavailable. Bereavement leave and any extension thereof must be approved by the employee's supervisor.
Full-time firefighters and Amb EMT P's accrue sick leave at the rate of 12 hours per month of service to a maximum accrual of 1440 hours. Such employees may, upon timely request, receive pay in lieu of accumulated sick leave in excess of 720 hours. Such payments are made on an annual basis and based upon 50% of the employee's current rate of pay.
Full time employees accrue sick leave at the rate of 8 hours per month of service to a maximum accrual of 960 hours. Employees may, upon timely request, receive pay in lieu of accumulated sick leave in excess of 480 hours. Such payments are made on an annual basis and based upon 50% of the employee's current rate of pay.
**Probationary employees are not eligible to use vacation leave until successful completion of the probation period. (Usually 1 year, but may be extended if deemed necessary by City Manager)

- Years 5-9 180 Hours per year (15 hours per month)
- Years 10+ 216 Hours per year (18 hours per month)
Full Time Firefighters and Amb EMT P's shall accrue vacation leave up to a maximum of 720 hours at the following rate:
Vacation
All full time employees, except for firefighters and Amb EMT P's, shall accrue vacation leave up to a maximum of 480 hours, at the following rate:
Holidays
- Years 0-4 80 Hours per year (6.67 hours per month)
- Years 5-9 120 Hours per year (10 hours per month)
- Years 10+ 160 Hours per year (13.33 hours per month)
Part time employees and firefighters accrue vacation leave at a pro-rated basis based on the above charts.
Part-time employees accrue sick leave on a prorated basis.
Military Leave
Any employee who is a member of the national guard, or any other component of the military force of the state organized or constituted under state or federal law, or who is a member of the reserve forces of the United States, organized or constituted under federal law, is entitled to leave of absence without loss of pay or applicable benefits during the time the employee is engaged with such organization or component in training or active service ordered or authorized by proper authority pursuant to law.
